The EFI VUTEk GS3250r
When you're a company already producing workhorse wide- and narrow-format UV-curable printing machines which sit comfortably in the band of mid- to high-range systems, you might be hard pushed to improve on what you're already manufacturing. However, earlier this year EFI pushed the boat out once again with the introduction of its VUTEk GS3250r, a dedicated roll-fed unit with a width of 3.2m.
I first saw this machine at FESPA Digital, and had the pleasure of interviewing EFI's chief executive Guy Gecht using the VUTEk GS3250r as our backdrop. In fact, it ran so quietly and efficiently throughout our discussion it was hardly an intrusion. What I really like about it is that it's been designed from the ground up to accommodate all the things that print service providers and display producers need these days. It might look like an existing VUTEk engine, but under the bonnet it most certainly is not.
One of its key aspects is that running costs have been reduced considerably, and this should appeal strongly to users who are hanging onto higher-end solvent-based printers in the belief that they still prove to be more cost effective. Such is EFI's confidence in this aspect that the company says monthly payback can be achieved with less than one hour of daily running time.
This is a really a platform which suits those wanting to produce all run lengths of roll-fed material, with multi-queuing and an automated double-sided printing capability included. Typical users include those who have continued with their solvent-based units or businesses who would prefer to keep their combination and hybrid printers more for flat-bed work. The GS3250r has a six-colour ink-set and a maximum output speed of up to 111sq m/hr. Optimum resolution is a true, not apparent, 1,000dpi so this makes it good for closely viewed jobs as well as bread-and-butter display print. Typical distance applications can be achieved at rates of 223sq m/hr.
Because of the increased awareness and need by users of wide-format technology to integrate their platforms with the rest of their businesses, EFI has ensured that the VUTEk GS3250r links with its web-to-print and MIS options, with JDF connectivity being integrated seamlessly. The machine is also optimised to run with the latest version of Fiery XF RIP and production software, again simplifying full and two-way communication for audit information.
Another benefit with this machine is the fact that it carries 3M's MCS (matched component system) warranty on the company's flexible materials when co-branded EFI and 3M inks are used. These six-colour UV-curable formulations are also geared for long and unattended print runs, supplied in sensible five-litre containers with a generous 15-month shelf life.
Like its earlier counterparts, EFI's VUTEk GS3250r is a solidly constructed machine, with its sensible design making access straightforward to all areas for operators. The ergonomic build of the machine also saves on space, yet it's rugged enough to handle 24/7 throughput.
The limitations on this machine are, of course, that it's only designed for roll-fed materials so an investor obviously needs to be able to justify having enough flexible throughput for it to earn its living. But the increased popularity for UV-curable applications sees solvent-based engines needing to be superseded, and this is a worthwhile platform for anyone wanting a true workhorse which runs more or less non-stop with minimal attention.

Pros and cons
EFI's VUTEk GS3250r is a good solution for display producers who want to output roll-fed jobs, day in and day out. This fact also limits it in application versatility, and users need to do their sums and work out their true throughput needs before deciding whether or not they would be better suited to a hybrid printer. There's also no white ink option within the current six-colour configuration.
Verdict
The EFI VUTEk GS3250r is a dedicated roll-fed unit which, within this specific application space, fills the need for users who want a workhorse printer that can take on multiple jobs and double-sided applications. Its economic ink usage and choice of output resolution makes it a versatile option within the market for flexible materials.
