Reusable wallpaper material was used to reproduce Ai Weiwei's photographs
Zurich-based printer The Image Factory has completed work for an exhibition of photographic and video work by Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, at the Swiss city's Fotomuseum Winterthur. The project involved combining Wallpaper Persomural material from Sihl Direct UK and Epson Stylus Pro 9900 and 11880 printers to create authentic reproductions of Weiwei's work.
The exhibition has since moved to Kunsthaus Graz Museum in Graz, Austria and the Jeu de Paume in Paris, France, using the same prints. Ian Turnbull, operations director of Sihl Direct UK, explains: "Because this display was the first in a series of Ai Weiwei exhibitions, the fleece basis of Persomural170 matt 3260 made it possible to reuse the prints.
"By using the adhesive supplement Tylose (methyl cellulose), the paper can be moistened and removed after the exhibition. It can be moistened again, pasted and then remounted in other locations. Even after repeated use, the dimension of the material remains unchanged and the printed image is as brilliant as ever."
Weiwei's photographic work, supported by other media including sculpture and interviews, questions the structure of Chinese society.
