The British Retail Consortium's Stephen Robertson has praised retailers' reduction in waste sent to landfill
In news that may influence perceptions of the display industry, a report released by the British Retail Consortium (BRC) has found that retailers have halved the amount of waste sent to landfill.
According to A Better Retailing Climate Progress Report 2010, less than a quarter of retail-produced waste now goes to landfill, in comparison with a figure of nearly 50 percent recorded in 2005.
While this covers waste including that from refrigeration systems, it also records display materials and other items, such as single-use shopping bags.
Stephen Robertson, BRC director general, comments: "These remarkable achievements by retailers show their commitment to tackling climate change has not wavered, despite the tough trading conditions.
"Retailers have a proud record of delivering impressive environmental results on a voluntary basis – without the need for legislation. This includes helping their customers use 4.6bn fewer single-use carrier bags between 2006 and 2010, despite major growth in sales."
