Tracey Emin's controversial new neon sign now hangs outside the Terracotta Room in 10 Downing Street

A neon sign made by controversial British artist Tracey Emin has been hung among other famous art pieces outside the Terracotta Room at the UK prime minister's residence at 10 Downing Street.

The sign, which has been valued at £250,000, reads 'More Passion' in red neon and was commissioned by David Cameron after the election in 2010.

Turner Prize-nominated Emin, who said the piece would give Number 10 'a bit of an edge', has already received sharp criticism from art and cultural critics in the UK and abroad.

For his part David Cameron has been accused of hypocrisy in choosing an artist who is identified as 'young British' while advocating a hard line, law and order response to the recent riots across England. Cameron has also been accused of making the Terracotta Room look like a nightclub.

Emin has made art consisting of neon lettering in the past, although the 'More Passion' script is significantly more tame than her usual work, consisting of personal messages and expletives.

Emin donated the piece to the Government Art Collection.
