[Morwenna Kearns, editor]

Welcome to the first weekly Output newsletter dedicated to the digital and electronic signage newsletter. If you were previously a reader of AKA.tv, you'll now be on this mailing list, so we hope you like it.

If you're unfamiliar with Output, we're an online magazine covering the whole of the signage, display and digital print sector. You can pick and choose what you want to read using our handy personalisation tool, so if you want to keep up with all the news, features, trade show previews, blogs and videos we deliver on digital signage but also want to see what's new in the wide-format print field, for instance, you can.

We also welcome industry expert Geny Caloisi to the editorial team, who will soon start to bring her digital signage knowledge and experience to Output, and of course, this newsletter.

Video of the Week [spacer line]

John Underkoffler points to the future of user interfaces

Recently, Output's junior reporter Nick Smith wrote about gestural user interfaces (UI) in digital signage. A number of companies are already bringing gesture-based engagement technologies to market and the outbound applications we've seen so far make us feel like the distant future has arrived from the film Minority Report.

In fact, our Video of the Week is a talk by John Underkoffler, chief scientist at Oblong Industries and science advisor on the 2002 Steven Spielberg film starring Tom Cruise. Underkoffler discusses the limitations of mouse and keyboard, demos Oblong's latest gestural UI and touches on why gestural can't not be the way of the future. If, as he says, personal computers will be shipping with gestural tech in five years' time, imagine what DOOH has in store for us.

You can see lots more videos on Output's YouTube channel, many of which have been filmed with our artistic hand.
