[Morwenna Kearns, editor]

This year was always going to be difficult, with the phrase 'fears for a double-dip recession' appearing in the UK newspapers on an all too regular basis. Following the collapse of printer manufacturer manroland, last week we also broke the news of On Demand Communications, parent company of franchises Kall Kwik and Prontaprint, going into administration.

Happily, however, other companies across production print, sign-making, digital signage and wide-format have fared rather better, and we're finishing off the year with a series of reviews of 2011, looking at our most memorable moments of the year and what they mean for 2012.

There won't be a newsletter next week as Output will be taking a little break, but look out for something festive and fluffy later in the week.

Last week, we asked our experts:

Why does it help to have an on-board spectrophotometer in my photo printer?

[Sophie Matthews-Paul]

"Applying a profile helps but there still remains the need for an on-board method of ensuring that output will remain true to its settings."

[Laurel Brunner]

"For absolutely spot-on colour accuracy, machines must be regularly calibrated and that requires a spectrophotometer."

Lady Gaga Christmas Flash Mob Starring Richard Bacon – Hollywood Monster supports Birmingham Children's Hospital

We're taking a bit of a break from our normal Videos of the Week to have some Christmas silliness – but all for a good cause, of course. Wide-format graphics producer Hollywood Monster is supporting the fantastic work done at Birmingham Children's Hospital with this film of a flash mob of street-dancing Santas invading Birmingham city centre. Look out for a cameo from Hollywood Monster's eponymous mascot as well.

You can catch up with our past VOTWs, see other videos that have caught our eye over 2011 and watch our very own library of Output films on our YouTube channel.
