Janet Napolitano broadcasts the message to Walmart customers

The US Department of Homeland Security is encouraging members of the public to play an active part in the country's safety by playing a video message on digital signage units in Walmart supermarkets nation-wide.

Secretary of homeland security Janet Napolitano is featured on the short public service announcement, which urges people to report any suspicious behaviour they witness to the relevant local authorities. The roll-out is part of the wider 'If You See Something, Say Something' campaign originally launched in New York City.

"Homeland security starts with hometown security, and each of us plays a critical role in keeping our country and communities safe," says Napolitano. "I applaud Walmart for joining the 'If You See Something, Say Something' campaign. This partnership will help millions of shoppers across the nation identify and report indicators of terrorism, crime and other threats to law enforcement authorities."

More than 230 Walmart supermarkets across the USA deployed the messages on checkout displays this week, with a total of 588 branches joining the campaign in the coming weeks.
